Scouting for Locations Means Exploring

One of my favorite photo locations is in the High Uinta Mountains in Utah. This particular spot is one of my favorite places for photoshoots and I am very stingy with who I share it with. I’ve had people reach out to me asking where it’s at and I tell them to pound sand. OK, I’m not that rude, but I’m very hesitant to divulge the location. I’ve had people message me privately and sometimes I’ll them know where it’s at. Generally, when they see how far of a drive it is, they lose interest.

The elevation here is about 11,000 feet above sea level. That’s about 3400 meters for those who have enough sense to use the metric system.

The magic of this location is that it’s only about a 5 minute easy walk off of the highway. But no one goes there because they stop at the scenic view from the highway, have a look around, maybe snap a few photos on their phone, and then drive away.

Once at this place, it’s completely private and out of view of anyone unless they happen to take the walk. In the several years I’ve been going here, I’ve never come across another soul.

I try to make it to this location at least two or three times each summer. It’s generally not accessible until around the second week of June.

This is a place that I found by just getting out of my car and walking. I don’t think that people photographers do that enough. Landscape photographers do it all the time, but a lot of people photographers would rather just beg for locations on social media or go to the local photographer hotspots and fight with other photographers. Give me a local popular with photographers location at golden hour, and that is a place you will not find me.

If health and mobility aren’t a problem, get out and explore and find your locations. Especially if you’re a “professional” photographer. I see photographers on local social media begging for location suggestions and advice and it’s not exactly professional, in my opinion.

Get out, explore, and have fun.
